Over the past ten years, the ultra-light spinning device has really gained popularity among fishermen.
Although they are of course ideal for small species of snowfish and trout and have always occupied this niche, many anglers have found the pleasure of hunting large game with extra light equipment.
The latter requires a little more detail in the parts of your fishing drum.
Landing a small rainbow or Kentucky bluegrass on an ultra-light plane can make you feel like taking home a brown trophy or a small mole.
Ultralight rotating rollers are designed for light and fine fish, but you cannot prevent large fish from being attracted to your presentation.
And there are rollers on the market with ultra-light equipment that can handle these fish, and the tension is so great that many anglers are starting to hunt 3 and 4 pounds of fish with ultra-light equipment. If you’ve already chosen a bass drum, check out our review here.
In this article we will examine ultra-light spider bobbins and discuss some of the most important features that make them suitable not only for small hairy game, but also for some larger species.
We’re also looking at five different ultralight models.
Super Lightweight Rotating Drum Sales Guide
Usually ultralight coils or the smallest model available in a certain series of coils are available in 7 ounces or less.
They generally have a maximum strength of 5 to 10 pounds and can be wound with 4 pounds of monofilament on a baseball field of 100 to 125 meters.
These are some of the basic specifications we will use to characterize the drum as ultra-light, but we play fairly freely with this metric.
This brings us to another interesting discussion about light spinning coils. What can they be used for?
You certainly have the traditional aspects of ultra-light fishing, small species such as your brown and rainbow trout or a variety of frying pans. They are ideal for small ponds where space is limited, and the ultra-light handles will always shine in such situations.
Here’s a great video that you definitely want to go fishing with microlight:
What about the bigger fish? Of course you are limited in the size of the bait and the number of heavier test lines, but with lighter bait you can catch bigger fish.
She’s opened the door for the big fish hunt, as far as possible. Of course you do not have the opportunity to pull some of them even with the best ultra-light equipment, but there is always the question of ethical fishing.
If you plan to cook them, the question of ethics is not so relevant, but for an athlete who just catches and releases them, you commit yourself to bring them quickly and put them back in the water before they are dead.
Body
These are ultra-light coils, which means that the material used for this type of coil is often made of lighter materials such as plastic or a type of graphite composite.
Most coils will be made of a mixture of graphite or aluminum alloy parts.
The body provides a gearbox and the body’s ability not to bend under load helps to keep the gears at the same height and makes it possible to direct most of your scrolls force to the gears and coils.
This is very important if you plan to use ultra-light equipment for fish over 3 pounds.
Coefficient of transfer
The gear ratio of the centrifugal drum is simply the number of rotor revolutions per handle rotation. For example, a gear ratio of 4.5:1 means that the rotor makes 4.5 revolutions per handle revolution.
The type of equipment you want on the reel depends on the type of fishing you are thinking of. The higher gear ratios are ideal for using ultralight reels for more traditional fish as they allow fish to recover faster with lighter bait, such as trout cocktails.
The disadvantage is that higher gear ratios often mean less power in the coil.
Coil
The size of the coil also determines the speed at which the line is pulled off the line. Large coils can contain more wire and lay more wire faster than smaller coils with smaller diameters.
Of course, there is a limit on the size of ultra-light coils in order to maintain the right weight and balance. Ultralight coils can contain about 100-125 meters of 4 pound monofilament.
There are some differences between ultralight coils, but these generally fall within this range of coil sizes. The design is also important and will support the casting process by cutting a dead line deeper into the roll.
Bearing
It is these bearings that support the internal gear mechanisms and guarantee the proper functioning of the coil. In most cases, more bearings usually means smoother coils, but the quality of these bearings is something to watch out for.
A roller with five high quality stainless steel and shielded bearings works better and longer under pressure than a roller with eight cheap bearings.
For ultra-light rollers used in conventional fishing, only 1 to 3 bearings are normally used.
If you want to catch fish that weigh more than a kilo, you need the top of that number, or maybe even more.
Towing system
Although a highly functional resistance system is an important part of any coil, it is essential to use an ultra-light coil to hunt fish that exceed 1 to 2 pounds.
Even for small fish, when working with lighter lines, traction should be smooth and starting inertia should be minimal.
If you’re trying to reach a weight of 2.5 pounds. For landing fish on these rollers, it is very important to have no inertia on takeoff and full control over the dredging area.
Feedback on ultralight rotary coils
Spinning Reel Shimano Sienna
No products found.
The ultra light Shimano Sienna 1000FE coil weighs 7.4 ounces and has a capacity of 110 meters monofilament of 6 pounds.
This is an impressive sum for such a small role, and although you probably never need this amount for perch or creeks, it is very useful if you have the opportunity to catch a larger fish.
This is the only feature of Siena that makes it suitable for hunting species that are not normally pursued with ultra-light equipment. The maximum traction is 9 pounds and the traction works smoothly with a low launch inertia, but we noticed that at the top you lose some of the fine tuning.
The removal with this spool is smooth and remains so that you normally use a spool of this size when planting normal fish. The roller uses only one ball bearing, but the quality is high enough to keep the roller smooth.
The Dyna-Balance technology used by Shimano also contributes to gentle extraction, but goes no further. Put a big fish on this reel and you will immediately notice the loss of efficiency.
In general we like the design and feel of the compact graphite M housing. It is extremely compact and perfectly balanced with an ultra-light stick, but it can be uncomfortable to use if you accidentally have large hands.
It may seem that we don’t like this coil in some parts of the view, and to hunt big fish, we don’t think it’s the right choice, but for normal use of ultra bright light Sienna looks great on the water and has a high quality Shimano design.

Abu Garcia Revo SX Spiral
With the 2X10 model of this drum line, we are once again expanding our criteria for the ultra-light rotating drum. The coil comes in 7.5 oz, and although it is slightly heavier than the other coils on this list, its construction is really good for short, light bars.
The reason we put this role on the list is because of the incredible drag and drop. It is a hybrid system with a carbon matrix that can withstand a resistance of 10 pounds, which brings us to the size of a coil.
If you want to play a bigger game with an ultra-lightweight handle, Revo SX can do that with this drag and drop system. It is incredibly flexible and durable and will remain so when the 110 meter mono is tested off the roll.
This reel has no problem pulling out for ultra-light normal fishing thanks to six high-quality stainless steel HPCR ball bearings. The IM-C6 carbon graphite can carry the main load and keep the gearbox rotating.
This is another reason why this lightweight reel is one of the best applications for ultra-light gear when hunting large fish. With a gear ratio of 6.2:1 and an extraction speed of 30 inches, you can quickly catch fish and get much more out of your fishing technique.
Compared to other models, the casts of the Revo SX 10 have jumped forward and forward. Due to the oblique side of the coil and the slow oscillation, which prevents the wire in the coil from twisting and overlapping, the wire can be easily discharged from the coil and extra meters of distance can be reached.
For
- One of the best drift systems in ultra-light aircraft.
- Incredible casting and control
- You could get a medium-sized fish.
- Large reel capacity
- It’s a little heavier, but with a good balance.
- A high recovery rate
Other
- pricier sth.

Revolving drum Presidential squad
President Plüger tends to make a lot of lists when it comes to state-of-the-art spools, so it’s not surprising that their 20X and 25X models do the same.
If we meet our criteria for an ultra-light coil, the 25X is slightly outside the 7.2 ounce weight range, but we will keep it on the list and discuss its ultra-lightness.
These coils are constructed with a graphite body and a rotor which we believe can withstand normal wear and tear as well as bending of the body when a little more pressure is applied. The cabinet can easily withstand one or two pounds of bass pressure.
Like most ultra-light coils, you won’t spend much energy on fish, and your ability to feed fish will depend on your stamina. The arm, caliper and coil are made of aircraft-grade aluminium and are resistant to many abuses.
At the same time it can be seen that the equipment does not provide maximum performance when working with large fish. You can still use them, and this coil has other features that make it powerful, but you may notice a difference.
Both models have a transmission ratio of 5.2:1, which is quite impressive for drums of this size. The line recovery speed is also impressive – 20.7 and 22.4 inches for the 20 and 25 inch models respectively.
The ultra light 20X coils are equipped with seven ball bearings, while the 25X model has a huge ten and shows the quality and placement of these coils. The president is by far one of the most elegant ultralight coils we’ve ever worked with.
Also with these two models the casting is phenomenal. The rotor and linear guide are among the best to minimize rope rotation, and it seems that the rope leaves the spool without much effort.
Both the 20X and 25X models can perform a test of 4 pounds per 100 meters and a test of 6 pounds per 100 meters.
The hermetic resistance system of these coils is just as impressive as that of the other coils. With a maximum resistance of 6 and 8 pounds on two models, it’s certainly enough to take out a bigger fish if you accidentally find it at the end of the line.
At the top of the resistance range, where the pressure seems to jump quite high, you lose some control over the setting. Moreover, it is flexible and durable throughout the fight, and the inertia of the launch is really low, which is crucial for the lines of the light.
We like the aluminium handle and the soft rubber handle. You’re far enough away from the coil to avoid jumping, but the balance is still there.
For
- Phenomenal smoothness of extraction
- Excellent performance of the coil
- Low initial inertia
- Affordable
- A comfortable handle
Other
- Not the best drag-and-drop control

Daiwa D-spin rotary coil
While some of the other models in this report can be used for larger fish, the D-Spin is not suitable for this category.
It’s a super cute little ultralight rotating reel. It is incredibly affordable, even though it is produced by one of the world’s largest coil manufacturers.
If you want to take a little trip to a stream to hunt creeks or redwoods, this is one of the best options. There are two models, both ultra-light, 500 (5.9 ounces) and 1000 (6 ounces).
Both are identical except for a small difference in size, and the 1000 model plays a big role.
The 500 and 1000 models have a graphite frame with a machined aluminium handrail (manual closing) and a coil. It is a smooth roller with a black graphite casing and aluminium parts.
Model 500 can be wound on a monofilament test roller up to 100 m long, while Model 1000 can be wound on a 120 m long roller. Monofilament for tests from 6 pounds to 40 yards of less than 4 pounds for each model.
Although this number is lower than many of the other models we have researched so far, it is sufficient for the areas where these coils are most useful.
This coil is manufactured with a Daiwa Digigear system that optimizes gear contact so that the coil can work smoothly under pressure, and if you remove large coils from the coil there is no delay in removing the coil.
This model is equipped with only one stainless steel ball bearing, and it can feel dry if you have more than 0.5 pounds of fish on the line. Well, for a single ball bearing system, it really exceeds expectations.
There is no anti-return system on these coils. Although this is not a problem for a small fish in a stream or even for most snowfish, it is a problem when working with large fish.
These are fairly fast reels, with a gear ratio of 4.9:1 and a line speed of 21.4, which is excellent for river fishing, where prey is often pulled onto the water and the bottom.
The spool is designed to ensure that the yarn comes out clean and the rotor and guide line on these models do a good job of minimizing yarn twist, although they are not as good as on some other Daiwa spin drum models.
These rollers use a common towing system in the stack with a maximum towing and dropping of 4.4 pounds each. The pull itself is smooth, and even if you catch a bigger fish, the inertia of the trigger is low enough to avoid the risk of breaking the line every time.
It’s a real ultra-light coil. However, it is sometimes a bit uncomfortable to work with water, if only because of its compact design. We wanted the handle a little further away from the sink.
For
- Very accessible
- Well built.
- Good casting
- A good Drag & Drop for the waist
- The Daiwa transmission system
- Funny little spool.
Other
- No safety net.
- The button strikes the bracket when it is removed.
- Only for small fries.

Okum Revenge coil
The AV-10b coil is made of corrosion-resistant graphite, which also significantly reduces the weight of the coil. It weighs only 2.5 kg and perfectly supports two 1.5 m rods, which is superior in conditions of dense and weak currents.
Although the body is strong enough for a small game fish, it cannot withstand the high pressure that occurs in larger fish, like the other roles on this list.
It can still do its job, and that’s perhaps the only feature of this reel that doesn’t make it the best ultralight option for big fish hunting.
This reel is perfect for faster fishing where a higher pulling speed with a ratio of 5.0:1 is required and where the pulling force is incredibly smooth, thanks in part to the six ball bearings used in this reel.
These quality bearings also ensure that the coil will work if you accidentally or intentionally knot a bass guitar.
Okuma also uses a very efficient and precise mechanical cutting system, including brass pinions, which also makes this system great for hunting fish that are slightly larger than trout or casseroles.
It is also very nice to cast on the Okuma Avenger, and the rotor and pipeline system is a good reason for that. The computer-balanced graphite rotor does an excellent job of minimizing line winding from coil to coil, resulting in an overall difference in casting distance.
This roll can wrap up to 110 meters of 4 pounds monofilament and 70 meters of 6 pounds monofilament. It’s also more than enough for any ultra-light fishing.
Like everything else on this reel, the towing system is impressive. Uses a stackable multi-disc system made of Japanese petroleum felt that can support 5 pounds of maximum strength.
The oil-impregnated oil scrubbers also make the resistance incredibly smooth when removed from the roller. They have reasonable pressure control, but this doesn’t seem to be a fine adjustment of 3 to 5 pounds.
Once it starts to work, it is one of the best drag and drop systems on the list, but at the top of the drag and drop system the inertia of the beginning is quite noticeable, and when it is high, with big fish that stop and walk a lot, your line of fire tends to break.
We love the spring and the handle of this coil. It is removed from the reel bucket and the extended pedal handle is important when working with large fish.
For
- A perfect grip and a good grip
- Smooth under pressure
- A perfect casting
- Large rotor
- It’s very simple.
- Gently pull and lay down in low spaces
Other
- Drought resistance at the top of the range

Conclusion
Before we let you go, let’s take a look at the five ultra-light rotating drums we have studied so far and discuss our best choice. This should in no way detract from the quality or effectiveness of the other four models, but there is one that simply stands out from the general context. It’s a role of Revo SX.
It is not the lightest role in the magazine, and we are sure that there will be purists who can challenge the classification as ultra-light, but for those presented in this article, it is our way to the role, not to mention the other light roles of Abu Garcia.
It balances well with ultralight rods, and has a towing system, cast and equipment to lure small lures into the water for normal ultralight fishing applications, and it can also work and land large fish without risk of failure.
And finally, if you think a standard weight rotating drum is the best fit for you, we have an article about the best of it, which you can see here.
