The PENN Fishing Tackle Company has been an American fishing company since the early 1930s. It produces reliable reels for freshwater and saltwater fishing, the subject of this report, the PENN® spinning reel Clash™.
In this overview of the PENN Clash, we look not only at the technical characteristics of the Penn Clash, but also at how these characteristics affect performance on the water.

Main characteristics of the impact PENN
PENN Clash is available in seven models. Like all reel series, they vary from small to large reels for various applications in fishing:
- CLA 2000: 8.2 ounces
- CLA 2500: 8.5 ounces
- CLA 3000: 10.2 ounces
- CLA 4000: 10.7 ounces
- CLA 5000: 16.9 ounces
- CLA 6000: 20.7 ounces
- CLA 8000: 27.2 ounces
Perhaps the only problem with these models is the lack of a real ultra-light coil. Moreover, they have models covering most fishing applications.
The coil has a visually attractive black gloss and a matt surface with gold accents. The regular reel may seem a bit cumbersome, but that’s because it’s built like a tank!
Although PENN is an American company, these coils are made in China.
Although the quality is still excellent, it’s a little strange how PENN tries to hide it with a small hidden sticker. Even if the coil doesn’t cause any problems, it makes you doubt your intentions.
One of PENN Clash’s main selling points is the all-metal housing, which contains an aluminium coil, side plates, bracket and handle.
The larger models also have an aluminium rotor, while the 2000-4000 models have a carbon graphite rotor.
This construction gives Clash incredible durability and creates a coil that won’t bend when pressed by active fish.
The aluminium housing will also be resistant to corrosion.
The hull is sealed in several important places, but there are some access points on the coil where salt can accumulate. If you have been under water for a long time, you should clean yourself thoroughly.
The CNC (Computer Numerical Control) gear technology optimizes the contact and adjustment of the gears.
The 2000-5000 models use a brass sprocket wheel and aluminium drive. The 6000 and 8000 models use brass gears and a brass drive.
Not only the know-how and material of the gears that place this system on top of all rotating drums, but also the struts and bushings used for the support are well thought-out and robust.
Transfer factors and switching recovery factor:
- CLA 2000: 6,2:1, extraction rate 30.
- CLA 2500: 6.2:1, search speed 33.
- CLA 3000: 6.2:1, search speed 35.
- CLA 4000: 6.2:1, search speed 37.
- CLA 5000: 5.6:1, search speed 36.
- CLA 6000: 5.6:1, extraction rate 41.
- CLA 8000: 4.7:1, search speed 40.
The coils are made of anodised aluminium to ensure durability and resistance to deformation.
All coils are designed with a structured seal and allow the braid to be attached directly to the coil. The coil is also equipped with linear capacity rings along the base for easy inspection.
Vibration and linear control
The PENN uses a flat oscillation system that keeps the rotor speed constant by distributing it evenly over the coil, regardless of the pressure and speed applied to the coil.
This is due to the gearbox, which slows down the rotation of the poker and keeps the keel even.
The video of the warranty line showed some problems for some consumers. With some coils, the coil is not correctly positioned in the rail and the wire may not wind smoothly and in a controlled manner.
PENN uses its well-known HT-100 carbon fiber hermetic resistance system. This is a first-class stackable strength system that uses stainless steel and carbon fibre rings.
A wave spring is also used to reduce pressure. The adjusting knob on the top of the coil is easily accessible.
The PENN always has an exceptional maximum resistance pressure, as shown in the graph below:
- CLA 2000: 10 GBP
- CLA 2500: 12 GBP
- CLA 3000: fifteen pounds
- CLA 4000: fifteen pounds
- CLA 5000: 20 GBP
- CLA 6000: 25 GBP
- CLA 8000: 30 pounds
All PENN crash models are equipped with an 8+1 bearing system with eight sealed stainless steel ball bearings. These bearings support the handle, the coil and the gears in the coil.
For some reason, the PENN has strange support points in the collision.
One of them consists of two bearings on the pinion, which ensure a firm rotation of the drum when it leaves the box.
Moreover, it has a strange bearing that carries the coil, which doesn’t seem to do much good.
They are also equipped with a non-return bearing that prevents reproduction.
Although this is not really a problem, we would like to mention in this section that Clash has a backup system in case of a first failure.
Handle and bracket
All models use a thick aluminium support with a friction plate to prevent the support from closing prematurely during casting.
The Clash models are also equipped with an aluminium handle that can be oriented for both right- and left-handed use.
All models are equipped with an oversized EVA foam handle that fits well and is easy to clean.
How it works
What the all-metal housing provides is a coil that continues to rotate and rotate regardless of the pressure applied.
When working with large fish, your body often bends or loses its shape.
This design of the hull makes it possible to withstand collisions and the funnel can send more force through the transmission system to plant these trophies.
If you have a giant fish at the end of the line, the spool will run next to you and just take out the bait. It also helped with the housing, but the way these gears stay on the same level is unbelievable.
PENN’s Dura-Gear technology, which PENN uses to produce durable and strong drive, oscillation and gears, ensures that the gears last a long time.
Transmission factors and recovery rates for lines
They are all slightly above average for shipping reports, but their search line is at the top of most lists.
These are excellent reels for moderate to higher bait removal speeds and can quickly reduce a good amount of line on the reel.
You will have no problem holding a decent number of shock coils, whether monoblock, braided or fluorocarbon.
You can put a lot of braid on the line because it is constructed in such a way that the braid can be attached directly to the coil without having to be afraid of slipping.
There is nothing special about the design of the lips or corners and it affects the performance when casting on rollers. It will work well for short and medium length pieces, but compared to other brands of high quality spinning drums, it certainly lacks.
The line capacity rings on the reel are useful for checking the amount of line used and whether you need to increase the pressure on large running fish. For the 6000 and 8000 models this is a very good feature.
Vibration and linear control
Whether it’s a light lure or a big bass, the rotor of the shock coil has no vibrations and always draws a line over the coil.
The problem with the line control system is the line roller mounted on a ball bearing.
The big problem is that over time, if it is not repaired, it becomes a loss and you get a much bigger curve of the line, causing confusion and bumps within your line.
You’ll never need pressure on those coils again.
The design of the wave-shaped feather pile also ensures smooth and even movement over the entire surface of the coil, which is important when working with larger and more aggressive fish.
The setting of the front resistor is also fantastic, and you can easily adjust the pressure of the front resistor. The trap is also airtight and ideal for use in salt water.
The problem with the HT-100 Drag and Drop system at Clash is that PENN reduces the number of rings used.
The way they designed the other rings creates a lot of tension on both sides.
Although dragging and dropping works normally, the problem is that the rings wear out much faster than they should.
Eight stainless steel bearings used in all models also have rubber seals to prevent corrosion. The quality of the bearings is excellent and they keep the part in motion and keep it in the water.
There are some questionable design issues regarding where the bearings will be mounted, but in most cases this will not affect performance.
Because of the pinion bearings, the rotation of the coil seems very tight, but over time it seems to weaken.
The two contradictory anti-return mechanisms are exceptional, and you won’t feel the reverse reading in fitting or rolling. It also gives you maximum connectivity on the water.
Handle and bracket
We love the depot and the stay in the barn. It may take a little more force to close, but it’s worth relying on what doesn’t close when you’re hit by the nest.
The handle is extremely strong and will not deform if you have to put a little force on it to scroll.
The large EVA handle is also easy to grip and use in any environment you are in.
Penn Clash for you?
With the power and value of these coils, it is a bobbin for everyone. This is a good reel for beginners or anglers looking for a more productive reel without having to hire one, and a large spare reel for anglers with a higher primary reel.
In all available role models you will find one that is perfect for perch, musk and pike in the cool environment, for light and heavy sea creatures in the surf, in apartments or on the open sea.
The PENN Clash is not the biggest spinning reel ever launched on the market.
It doesn’t have all the frills like some spider bobbins, but the fact that it has a robust construction with solid basic components that work very well.
It has several design flaws, but these do not obscure the benefits of this rotating drum. If you push this coil into the water, you’ll be happy.
