In this preview of Abu Garcia’s discreet Silver Max lure we look at the drum, which may not have all the frills of some other models, but we think it is a great option for many fishing companies.
Abu Garcia’s Silver Max is a slightly reduced version of their Pro Max, but still offers excellent functionality on the water. This is the perfect lure for those who want to get into the lure game or need a secondary or tertiary reel for their equipment.

Abu Garcia Silver Max: Recessed vision
The Silver Max has a solid graphite frame and graphite side plates, which keeps the weight of this lure low. In addition, an aluminium coil with connections is used, which further reduces the weight.
Although it is not the strongest spiral in terms of body strength, it is a spiral that can be thrown all day without fatigue and is more than capable of withstanding daily abuse.
Although operating this reel from its intended fishing targets can cause problems with frame deflection and loss of efficiency, the graphite body is of sufficiently high quality and so well designed that it is not a problem for most fish.
In fact, it is much more resilient than the price suggests.
Sensitive and easy to use
The low profile lure has a double curved handle that is extremely compact. This contributes to the agronomic aspect of the Silver Max and the two handles of the paddleboats are easy to hold.
In addition to the handle there is a star resistance, which also has a curved design that makes it easy to adjust during a fight.
There’s a bit of play and a swing in the scroll, but that’s not enough to complicate the search. The reel is also built with a recessed reel base that rests very low on the rod.
This allows the reel to fit better in the palm of your hand, allowing you to play with your thumb over the entire surface of the reel.
We like the MagTrax magnetic brake system used on Silver Max. The brake can be adjusted quickly and easily using the scale on the side plate opposite the handle of the coil.
This braking system ensures an even pressure on the reel from the start of casting until the moment the lure hits the water. This does not completely eliminate possible slack on the coil and still requires a small handbrake to check the line.
The gear ratio of this lure makes it ideal for slower but deeper pulling methods used with medium cranks, jerks and other diving methods.
With some adjustment of the coil tension Silver Max is able to deliver these lures at amazing distances and with precision.
Rocket clutch technology is another useful feature in certain casting techniques, such as turning and throwing or simply releasing the line.
Contrary to other attempts to use this function, it is not necessary to hold down the switch to turn off the bobbin. Instead, the clutch is pressed and the coil remains open.
When you are ready to activate the reel, simply press the switch next to the clutch. So you have one hand to turn the coil on and off.
It is an interesting feature that is useful for certain techniques, and Silver Max makes it incredibly easy to use.
With its five stainless steel ball bearings and brass pinions, the Silver Max offers excellent suction performance.
The brass gears are manufactured and aligned using Abu Garcia’s Duragear technology, which significantly extends the life of the gears and requires them to rotate under high pressure.
This lowers the transmission ratio slightly, but the coil compensates for the excellent scrolling power. This reel works very well under heavy fishing pressure, and the main reason for this is the gear and bearing system.
The speed of searching on the line is about average for other byte wheels of this size, and it’s not a good option for quick search methods, but it can still do the job.
Scrolling makes it ideal for deep diving and heavier lures. The braking system, in combination with the gear ratio, also makes it one of the few lures that can withstand finer fishing techniques.
The Power Disk system uses synthetic washers and can drag and drop more than you would need for normal flat profile bait.
At the lower end of the facial resistance range the initial inertia is low and the synthetic rings provide a smooth and even facial resistance pressure.
You may be a bit nervous at the top of the resistance zone, but it’s nothing serious. The Drag & Drop star setting next to the handle can be easily adjusted with the thumb, even during battle, and you have very fine control over the setting.
The Abu Garcia Silver Max lure is not the top role in the range, and it doesn’t have the features you find in other low profile reels for over $100.
That doesn’t mean it’s a bad role, in fact we think it’s exactly the opposite of Silver Max. He throws well, feels good in his hands and knows how to handle fish.
With these three elements you have an affordable and discreet lure that you can follow in the water. If it’s not what you’re looking for, you can check out our reel reviews to see if there’s something suitable for you.
All in all, it is a great starting point for someone who wants to step into the world of bait, but it will also be interesting for more experienced anglers. Do yourself a favor and think of Silver Max Abu Garcia.
