In this article we focus on the new roller line from Shimano, a proven and reliable roller manufacturer.

NASCI is a mid-size universal coil with great functionality, and we like to look at what makes it so special.

Shimano investigates NASCI

ModelOptions

From the almost ultralight 7.6oz. model 1000 to the larger model 5000, it is most suitable for large freshwater fish and medium-sized marine animals.

All these models have many of the same features, including Hagane Transfer, X-Ship technology and Coreprotect. These coils differ in certain characteristics such as line throughput, transfer rates, extraction rates and maximum strength. They contain the 4 ball bearings A-RB and a roller bearing.

Easy to use

We love the way NASCI feels in your hands. Balanced with the correct pivot point, this flush is easy to handle in the water all day long without getting tired. The aluminium handle and enlarged rubber wing grip give you excellent leverage when trying to land a fish, and have little slip, swing or reverse play.

This thick aluminum lure is also well constructed and has an automatic bait lock that will appeal to many anglers. With this reel everything seems to be within reach, including the drag and drop of the controls at the top of the reel.

The NASCI also uses a G-free body, which brings the vibrations and center of gravity closer to the rod. This only improves the already excellent balance, increases sensitivity and reduces fatigue even further.

Construction

Shimano’s NASCI belt line has the quality of design that this company expects. The coil itself looks like an aerodynamic, well-lubricated machine. The reel, the sleeve and the thick aluminum alloy wire are designed to fight, and the reel as a whole is perfectly resistant to the bending of the body under the action of the torque and the force exerted on the fish.

Although it is not a fully sealed reel, Shimano Coreprotect technology is used to seal the reel at key points of the body, the roller coupling and the linear roller.

This, together with the corrosion resistant ball bearings, keeps the coil in a salty environment, but the coil still needs to be thoroughly cleaned.

Shimano NASCI is a great reel. With its dark blue metal surface and golden accent, it looks like a reel that will cost a lot of money, but the price will be a pleasant surprise.

Compared to other spinning bobbins on the market it might seem expensive, but the performance of these bobbins is much higher than the price.

One of the main characteristics of the NASCI roles is that they are very similar to the high-end models offered by Shimano, but at a much lower price. Shimano uses some of the commercially available ball bearings (A-RB), which are characterized by their resistance to extraction and corrosion.

There are only four, but they are more efficient and have a longer lifespan than many other models that produce several more bearings.

In addition to the ball bearings, the NASCI rollers are equipped with Hagane gears. This transmission system, which is only used by Shimano, uses 3D computer design to create transmissions that have optimal contact with each other.

This means that the gear system remains in perfect position in the water, even when the fish is turning, resulting in an ultra-smooth coil.

Indirectly, this ease of movement of the toothed system also contributes to the casting, as the thread is laid evenly with a smooth rotor, reducing the rate of thread twisting and maximising the overall length of the spool.

This gear system, together with the already mentioned handle and clutch, means that you get a good amount of running power out of this reel.

Hagane makes Shimano’s roles really spectacular. Just watch this video and be amazed:

In addition, the X-Schiff technology uses ball bearings to support the gearbox. This bracket holds the sprocket and driveline in place and is an excellent support to maintain maximum flushing efficiency when you have trophy fishing at the end of the line.

All these technologies ensure that the top-of-the-range coil works as it should.

Each NASCI model has excellent transmission ratios for its size. These are universal spaces where you can use many different styles and techniques of bait on the water.

The speed of extraction also throws us out of the water. 36-41 inches per twist of the handle, which is incredible for three large rollers, and even two smaller models are impressive. It is an extremely effective spool to get the fish into the boat.

Casting

We’ve often praised the smooth extraction for NASCI, and the praise doesn’t stop there. The castings on this reel are phenomenal.

The design of the coil and the rotor ensures that the wire on this coil twists as little as possible, and the wire seems to be easily removed from the coil with little friction due to the overlap in the coil. It still has no bait spacing, but for the rotating drum, depending on the size of the model, it can get a lighter light to make even heavier bait.

Everything on the coil is connected somehow, and the same technology that provides incredible extraction speeds and starting power also improves the NASCI foundry’s performance.

In terms of price, the overall performance of the design of this coil is far above our expectations.

Towing system

The NASCI is equipped with a direct anti-rebound function, which means that one must be able to pull and drop with the hook. With coils this size, the traction is unbelievable. Yes, maximum air resistance is unrealistic, but we don’t even make the most of it.

If you have coils of this size with an enormous resistance, you usually have very little control over the amount of pressure at the top of the range.

This is not the case with NASCI. The fine-tuning you get with this drag and drop is almost unrivalled.

After the fight he is incredibly supple, with no noticeable bumps, and maintains this suppleness even when adjusted in the middle of the fight.

The inertia at the beginning of the bet is a bit noticeable if you start with high resistance, and it can be a disaster if you work with a lighter line, but that’s the only problem we have with this drag and drop system.

Conclusion

With the price, most people can see Shimano’s NASCI as an entry level model of Shimano with lower performance than some other models. And while Shimano makes some of the best roles in the upper class, Shimano NASCI doesn’t make something like an entry-level role.

The soft and silky pullout, the deceptive scrolling and the outdated resistance make this reel one of the best in the price range we know.

NASCI models of different sizes can be used in both fresh and salt water. Do yourself a favor and think seriously about that coil.
